This is the first in a small series about the people who wear our scarves. Five women, five ways of tying, five very different lives.

We met all of them in shops or at trunk shows. None of them were paid. None of them signed anything. This is what they had to say.

A gallerist in Notting Hill

She wears the silk twill knotted at the throat, over a soft cotton shirt. "I have three now," she said. "One I bought for myself and two I stole from my sister."
